Canada and China extend existing agricultural market access through 2028
IN SHORT
At a ministerial-level Joint Economic and Trade Commission meeting in Beijing, Canada and China agreed to extend favourable market access for Canadian canola meal, peas, lobster and crab through the end of 2028. Canada also announced an extension of existing remission measures for specified Chinese steel and aluminum products not made domestically.
WHY IT MATTERS IN CANADA
The extension concerns existing terms for named Canadian agricultural and seafood exporters and specified Canadian importers of Chinese metals. Eligibility and applicable tariff treatment must be checked against the underlying implementing instruments and product-specific conditions.
WHAT HAPPENED
- The existing bilateral Preliminary Joint Arrangement was extended to December 31, 2028 for Canadian canola meal, peas, lobster and crab.
- Canada said previous remission measures for certain Chinese steel and aluminum products not made in Canada would also continue to the end of 2028.
INTERPRETATION
This is an extension of previously announced trade access and relief, not proof of an entirely new market opening, realized shipments, a signed commercial contract or specific tariff eligibility.
